Telling Stories Is Very Satisfying

For 12 years, from 1997 to 2008, I wrote a remodeling series for the Los Angeles Times called “Pardon Our Dust.” I am the senior developer here at CEU Producer, but at that time I did journalism.

I was lucky enough to have only two editors during those years, Dick Barnes and Lauren Beale, which explains why the series lasted so long. Each of these editors loved and championed my series.

My intent was to show what happens between the “before” and the “after” of a remodel. There is a big story for each remodel and I felt that readers should know what happens, what can happen, what should happen. If people only knew about the “process” rather than just the pretty finished product, they would be calmer about the whole thing.

I also love telling stories in the CEUs I produce. I’m always looking for an example of how a certain product or process solved a problem. Researching and writing about problems and solutions is deeply gratifying. I’ve got, it seems, a lot more storytelling to do.
